Job Description

This New Business Development Manager role is based in Houston and reports to the Global Marketing Manager for Polymers.

The Marketing & Strategy teams and this role will play a pivotal role in shaping and driving global growth and expansion of Shell’s Polymers business.  To drive impactful and sustainable growth, s/he will not only work on potential opportunities identified by the global strategy team but also proactively anticipate business opportunities and lead investigation, design, and execution of those initiatives.  S/he will have the ability to assess the dynamic landscape of our businesses, analyze solutions, build the business case, influence stakeholders, and drive execution and change.  S/he will look at the landscape with both a macro and micro lens in terms of market, customers, competitors, technology, and geography.  The new leader will participate in a variety of key enterprise and business specific decisions and work closely with global senior executives in identifying and driving growth opportunities for the business and contribute to other enterprise initiatives.

In addition, specific responsibilities include the following:

Setting Marketing Strategy: Leads the development of marketing plans, channel strategies, and product mix proposals by working with the global business opportunity teams and functional partners to analyze and develop competitive growth opportunities.  Ensures disciplined business opportunity processes are followed that drive a consistent analytical philosophy and result in credible opportunity development.  Possesses a global mindset and is an integrative thinker who envisions possibilities across disciplines, multi-party ventures, regions, and scenarios.  Navigates ambiguity with confidence and grasps the essentials in complex situations.

Identify & Explore Portfolio Opportunities: S/he will strategize options in the Chemicals portfolio to drive growth, as well as lead the marketing development in alignment with the overall business needs, identify significant new cross-region opportunities and breakthrough areas and domains for active investment.  S/he will develop market size, segmentation, and opportunity assessments combined with strategies to develop new offerings, technology license solutions, and market entry plans.  S/he will use strong strategic and analytical abilities to identify portfolio strategy opportunities.

Lead Strategic Analysis of Global Industry and Competitors:  S/he will build both a global view for a report out to senior leadership and plans to drive key programs and growth in key market segments. The candidate will demonstrate their ability to anticipate stakeholder concerns, develop sensitivities, understand complex business dilemmas, research market trends, and utilize data (and assumptions) to model proposals.  S/he will develop business cases, influence leaders, and progress business opportunity team projects.  Success will be based on the ability to deliver competitive growth opportunities, meet stakeholders expectations to achieve stage gate approvals, drive execution, and articulate impact to the business and bottom line.

Requirements

Candidates will be strong strategists who have demonstrated delivery in a global polymers business.  This person will have extensive experience, ideally with a mixture of technical or operational and business management experiences, supporting polymers businesses, specifically in growth or transitional phases.  S/he will have deep experience in product portfolio planning and have demonstrated strong strategic and analytical thinking, customer focus, prioritization, and risk management skills.  A successful track record in other functional areas, including business and product management, strategic marketing, and experience with new project stage-gate processes, would be particularly attractive for this role, as well as preparation for future growth within Shell Chemicals.  Strong executive presence and interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills are essential, as is the ability to effectively operate and influence in a multifunctional, globally matrixed environment.  Having cross-cultural business experience either through an expatriate assignment or working directly in businesses with significant overseas interests, particularly in emerging regions, is highly desired.  Excellent analytical skills, creative problem solving, and sound business judgment is essential.  A bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or business, and an MBA from well-established schools are preferred.  The ideal candidate will be self-driven and have the desire and ability to assume greater responsibility, including senior roles identified in Shell’s succession planning process.

Leading Teams – Effectively manages strategic planning, partnering, industry intelligence, strategic projects as well as coordinates virtual teams across functional and business groups as well as external resources.  Understands how to drive change and results in a matrixed environment, effectively leverages shared resources, and delivers through others without direct authority.  Comfortable with a highly dynamic environment, ambiguity, and high levels of autonomy.
