As Nike Legal Counsel for India you will be part of NIKE’s South East Asia & India Legal Team and you will be responsible for a variety of general corporate law and commercial legal / advisory work as well as regulatory/compliance matters for Nike’s business in India. The business includes sales, marketing, manufacturing, retail and e-commerce. In this role you will need to advise and interface regularly with the relevant business teams and other support functions, including tax, finance, customs and HR. In this role you will be reviewing information and data, researching laws, regulations, and precedents, and preparing recommendations, contracts or documents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contracting, Drafting and Negotiations: Review, draft and negotiate agreements and documents relating to regulatory matters and transactions involving Nike entities. Such services may require interaction with NIKE business managers involved in the relevant transaction or regulatory matter.
  • Advise and counsel NIKE business managers on a wide range of legal issues. Such advice and counsel involves identification of legal issues, analysis of legal risks and creation and implementation of solutions structured to achieve business objectives efficiently with minimum legal and practical risk. Monitor and research (changes in) laws. Review and update legal precedents.
  • Act as a key contact to local authorities and governmental bodies in India and keep effective relations with them.
  • Management of outside legal counsel providing specialized services to Nike. Such duties involve effective management of the provider of legal services to ensure cost-effective representation.
  • Play an active role on the Government & Public Affairs (Asia) team by helping the business navigate through relevant government policy and regulatory issues, actively monitoring the policy/legislative landscape, advocacy and engagement of key government and business stakeholders
  • Support and provide legal assistance as may be required by other functions of the Nike CAO including brand protection, information security and general compliance.
  • Focus areas for this role include laws relating to corporate governance, general corporate, commercial, business, consumer protection, anti-trust and fair competition, trade, e-commerce, foreign investment and dispute resolution in India.
Requirements for this position include – 
 
  • Bachelors or master’s degree in law or local equivalent and registered with a Bar Council in any of the States in India.
  • Minimum 8-12 years post qualification in general business, corporate and commercial laws, ideally with a mixture of both law firm and in-house experience.
  • Demonstrated time management, project management, attention to detail and workload management skills.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including ability to work effectively with the business teams and cross functional teams across geographies.
  • Ability to work under pressure, multi-task, establish priorities and solve problems.
  • Should be able to exercise sound judgment and discretion to opine on legal issues effectively.
  • Ability to work as part of a large, matrix organizational structure, in (virtual) teams and independently as needed.
  • Able to communicate (written and verbal) effectively and clearly in a multi-cultural environment.
