Role Summary:

Post-doctorate fellows are responsible for technical direction and research execution related to work in high temperature capable materials: new alloy design, root cause analysis for processing and manufacturing improvement, metallurgy based service and repair work, high temperature ceramics processing and/or ceramic coating technologies for a broad range of current and future GE products in high-temperature and ultra-high temperature applications.

Essential Responsibilities:

Your primary responsibility in this job will be to provide technical expertise in processing-microstructural-property relationships in alloy and/or ceramics systems research work at GE Research.

You will:
  • Conduct basic and applied research as part of an interdisciplinary team in Structural Materials including new alloy design, root cause analysis for processing and manufacturing improvement, metallurgy based service & repair work, and/or developing stable, high temperature and ultra-high temperature oxide and non-oxide ceramics of interest to GE businesses.
  • Characterize and identify degradation modes and approaches for improving the lifetime of high temperature material systems
  • Work across organizations, including leading and interfacing with the characterization team on technical execution.
  • Interface and communicate with GE businesses and external partners and universities on related research activities.
  • Maintain, upgrade and train on multiple equipment necessary to conduct experiments.
  • Reduce data to useful form using appropriate mathematical techniques and software tools
  • Maintain accurate records of the work performed and other records required by the projects.
  • Share project progress internally and externally through oral presentations, written reports, and as appropriate through external and internal publications and IP disclosures.
  • Perform all work in accordance with environmental, health and safety guidelines.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering, Ceramic Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, or related field.
  • Experience in high temperature thermodynamics, metal forming, casting, powder processing, sintering, and/or phase equilibria.
  • Working knowledge and hands on experience with characterization tools, such as optical, scanning, and transmission electron microscopes, X-ray diffraction, high temperature dilatometry and thermal analysis methods.
  • Working knowledge and hands on experience in high temperature testing of ceramics and/or metals in extreme environments.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research through peer reviewed publications.
  • This role is
    restricted to U.S. persons (i.e.,
    U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the
    Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to
    export-controlled technology. GE will require proof of status prior to
    employment.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Hands-on experiences with high temperature and ultra-high temperature ceramics, such as ZrB2, SiC, and/or MAX phases.
  • Hands on experiences with high temperature alloys such as refractory metals and High Entropy Alloys
  • Experience in application of thermodynamics/kinetics to high temperature processes.
  • Personality and drive to deliver in an exciting R&D environment that operates in a dynamic working environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interface with senior leadership and customers with confidence and clarity.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on innovative ideas for products and processes.
