Responsibilities

The Standards division, of Underwriters Laboratories Inc., is currently seeking a Senior Standards Engineer to join our growing team. In this role, you will work across a variety of functional groups that are directly involved in the development and maintenance of UL and ULC standards in support of our public safety mission and to accomplish strategic and operational goals. You will have the opportunity to be directly involved in the development of new safety requirements in response to emerging technologies and services in areas such as building and construction products (including interior finish materials, roofing, and ventilation products. Additionally, you will organize and facilitate stakeholder meetings, use effective mediations skills to drive the standards development process, and support the growth and development of our technical team to advance UL’s mission. A successful team member is someone who can manage multiple projects, enjoys a fast-paced environment, and has excellent organizational and communication skills.

  • Recognizes and supports Standards response to evolving technologies.
  • Supports the adoption of cross-cutting component and function related safety standards and requirements in all relevant end product and service standards.
  • Assist with the incorporation of up-to-date referenced standards in UL Standards.
  • Assist in monitoring technical trends, developments (including but not limited to code and regulatory), and advancements in areas of expertise.
  • Organize and present technical information to stakeholder groups in support of selected standards development initiatives.
  • Assists with the dissemination and gathering of related technical information with our domestic and international partners.
  • Contributes to the development of training and educational programs for stakeholders through webinars, presentations, seminars, tradeshows, articles and public speaking events
  • Represent UL at industry related functions such as seminars and trade shows.
  • Successfully executes on complex project issues with limited guidance.
  • Applies a strategic approach to project and initiative management.
  • Significantly contributes to complex special assignments at the direction of Standards Management.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering plus 5 years of related work experience.
  • Familiarity with US and Canadian Standards and Codes, as well as national, regional, and international standardization bodies.
  • Desired knowledge of fire test methods and building products, safety requirements, and code requirements.
  • Desired knowledge of the relevant domestic and international industry standards, regulations, and guidelines in the area of building and life safety technology, specifically in fire safety and fire protection.
    • Includes ability to apply these to complex, new, and innovative products.
  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate in a technical manner and exercise influence with industry and other stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in interpreting, supporting, and executing directives under minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated proficiencies in common business applications (Word-processing, spreadsheets, presentations)
  • Employs excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrates ability to relate effectively to others.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and time management skills.
