The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As an Environmental Specialist–Water Quality Focus, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Serving as the primary subject matter expert for 3M on National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulations and related requirements, with a focus on industrial discharges
  • Designing and implementing water quality permitting and compliance programs and related improvements, including standard processes related to Management of Change, to ensure ongoing compliance with water quality regulations
  • Determining applicability of NPDES requirements to 3M manufacturing operations in the United States
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of internal programs, processes, and technology related to the water discharges at 3M manufacturing facilities
  • Providing technical input to national, state, and local government entities on water quality rules or policies under development.

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M is looking for candidates who must have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
  • Seven (7) years experience in water quality permitting and regulatory compliance in a private, public, government or military environment
  • Five (5) years experience working directly National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulations

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental, Chemical, Civil, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited institution
  • Experience leading water quality permitting projects for complex industrial facilities involving NPDES and related state regulations (experience in multiple states is advantageous).
  • Experience leading factory compliance activities related to wastewater and stormwater discharges
  • Possesses a working knowledge of water pollution control equipment chemistry, design, and operation in order to facilitate problem resolution
  • Skills include project management, strategic thinking, and strong interpersonal and communication practices

Travel: May include up to 30% domestic/international

Responsibilities of this position may include direct and/or indirect physical or logical access to information, systems, technologies subjected to the regulations/compliance with U.S. Export Control Laws.
