Financial management is crucial to the performance and success of any company. The roles and responsibilities of the Coursera Finance team include accounting, financial reporting, analysis, planning, budgeting, and compliance. Problem solvers at heart, this team works to fuel Coursera’s growth by developing creative solutions in response to accounting and finance challenges.
The Director of Accounting will develop a deep understanding of our key accounting positions and systems with a particular emphasis surrounding revenue.  This role will lead the establishment of scalable processes, internal controls and technical analysis both domestic and international.  The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong understanding of GAAP and revenue recognition principles, excellent technical and communication skills, and the ability to partner effectively across business functions.

Your responsibilities:

  • Be the technical accounting global leader for the company – research, document and implement key accounting policies
  • Build and manage strong business partnerships with key finance, legal, and sales leaders to ensure effective internal control collaboration in a fast-paced environment and identify and recommend process improvements
  • Manage revenue close and stay current on revenue recognition guidance ASC 606 and make interpretations of guidance.
  • Prepare technical accounting memos that analyze and conclude on revenue issues related to customer contracts as required
  • Support as needed with special projects, technical analysis and workflow process improvements surrounding equity, M&A, commissions, IUS and international expansion
  • Continue to improve the teams monthly and year end closing process – ensuring financial reporting deadlines are met and financial statements are compliant with GAAP
  • Ensure finance team and business partners are trained as needed on new technical accounting pronouncements
  • Work with external auditors
  • Assist with planning and strategy surrounding Federal and State tax reporting requirements, including income and indirect international taxes.  Create working partnership with our external tax advisors.
  • Scale accounting team through mentorship, hiring and goal setting
  • Assist with banking and treasury functions as needed
  • Develop financial reports and a financial reporting process with appropriate controls and reviews
  • Support as needed with special projects, Netsuite functionality, projects and workflow process improvements.

Your skills:

  • 8 – 10+ years of blended experience in public and private accounting
  • Technical knowledge of US GAAP required,
  • Working knowledge of ASC 606 for SAAS is required
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, Business, Economics or related field
  • 4-5+ years of management experience
  • SOX compliance experience
  • CPA license preferred
  • International experience is desired
  • Knowledge of NetSuite is desired
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to work with systems and large sets of data
  • Excellent communication, management and analytical skills combined with sound business judgment
  • Ability to effectively communicate and document as needed
