Material Flow Project Engineer

The Role:

Project engineers on the Material Flow Engineering team are responsible for the efficient and reliable flow of material to the Tesla manufacturing lines.  As a project engineer you are responsible for supporting technical projects from “cradle to grave”.  This includes the design, implementation and continuous improvement of automated material handling equipment such as automated storage systems, final assemble conveyance such as car bodies, batteries, and drive units etc.  Project engineers support the design and technical scope of a project as well as traditional project management functions such as timelines, budgets and coordination’s with vendors and other groups within Tesla.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement new and innovative material handling solutions that leverage automated systems to achieve Tesla’s goal of highly automated manufacturing processes that can be replicated in facilities all over the world.
    • Develop analytical models to establish design criteria and overall system performance criteria
    • Responsible for specifying equipment in form of project specifications and requirements
    • Leveraging outside partners for solution development and design
    • Support the overall layout and system design process including AutoCad layouts, modeling and simulation of individual technologies and entire systems
  • Technical project management and implementation
    • Manage budget, timeline and scope
    • Manage the installation of equipment on site
    • Support trouble-shooting during installation and start-up
    • Smooth handoff to operations at Tesla factory locations
  • Effectively communicates and collaborates openly with vendors, internal management and other mechanical and control engineers on the Material Flow Engineering team.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • 3+ years of technical project management experience
  • Material handling and process equipment design experience within the manufacturing and material handling environment
  • A passion to implement and work on mechanical automation equipment, robots, design of electromechanical systems, PLCs, motion controls and navigation Systems.
  • Ability to see a project from concept to manufacturing while working in a close-knit, team environment
  • Experience in AutoCad
  • Values people, ethics, commitment, fun and an engaging culture.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills. Ability to manage several complex projects at the same time with high degrees of variation and uncertainty.
  • Natural ability to speak and write effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Position will offer unique and complex engineering challenges that require persistence, innovative thinking and a positive attitude

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Knowledge of and experience with material flow strategies and dynamic manufacturing systems.
