Allen Gears, trading as Allen Gearing Solutions Limited is part of BHGE Oil and Gas. Allen Gears is a world leader in the design of high-performance gearboxes for industrial and marine applications. Our reputation is built on over 70 years’ experience in providing innovative solutions to highly specialised markets that demand nothing less that the best in engineering excellence.

Role Summary:

This role will be focused on creating new gearbox design concepts for epicyclic, compound epicyclic, parallel shaft, marine and combination gearboxes for a range of applications including power generation, nuclear, compressor drives and marine to name but a few, and also to maintain and develop new rules for future gearbox designs taking advantages of new materials, detailed FEA analysis to challenge existing rules and advanced manufacturing processes to allow development of existing products.

Essential Responsibilities:

You will be required to perform detail design calculations, create layouts, maintain and develop in house design programs and rules whilst automating where possible the link between design programs, CAD inputs for 3D model generation and 2D manufacturing drawing outputs.  In this role you will utilize your experience or expertise to solve problems, develop new gearbox concepts and rules and assist in analysing and resolving any gearbox related rotor dynamic issues which may arise.

  • Ability to produce gearbox design layout concepts complete with all relevant engineering calculations, analysis and assessments to verify integrity and functionality for a wide range of driveline applications.
  • Ability to challenge existing design rules and develop new rules for future gearbox design by utilising latest market technology, products, materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to maintain existing in-house developed gearbox technical design programs and to develop new additional programs to assist design engineering calculations and evaluations.
  • Ability to update existing technical design programs with newly developed rules or to incorporate changes from the latest release of new or updated international standards ensuring we are always working to the latest rules and requirements.
  • Carry out detailed FEA analysis using ANSYS to reduce stress raisers thus minimising component sizes and complexity and hence reducing costs.
  • Interpret and summarise the results from complex structural analysis tools such as FEA, rotor dynamic reports and N&V data for the purposes of evaluating product performance.
  • Carry out rotor detailed dynamic analysis on both single shaft and multi-shaft complex systems to ensure gearbox designs do not experience rotor-dynamic instabilities when installed at end user site.
  • Ability to maintain a good relationship with ITO, OTR and manufacturing teams to satisfy (internal & external) customer requirements.
  • Ability to recognise limiting features in a new product design to enable manufacture & creation of designs to satisfy customer demands / challenges.
  • Responsible for providing guidance and advisory leadership to competent co-workers in the same discipline.
  • Responsible for understanding project scope of supply and time required to deliver, considering customer expectations.
  • Calculate product performance details including mechanical integrity, interfacing with other equipment and operating efficiency.
  • Interpret customer specifications from documents and discussions and translate into Allen Gears / BHGE internal documentation.
  • Produce a clearly documented electronic design file with all relevant design calculations, correspondence and data for ease of reference by others.
  • Ability to produce technical reports for distribution internally and externally to clearly convey the analysis carried out and the results of this analysis
  • Understand gear geometry, materials and production technology to accurately specify and assess manufacturing requirements and confidently communicate these requirements to internal and external customers.
  • Design and selection of hydrodynamic and rolling contact bearings together with supporting structures, complete with calculations of bearing performance and lives, to established rules.
  • Update engineering team and other areas across the business with project progress throughout the pre-production stage.
  • Undertake improvement activities as required to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Maintain a high level of quality at all times throughout the entire design process.
  • Willingness to travel within the UK and overseas to technical meetings in support of the product sale, contract design phase and problem solving.
  • Any other duties considered to be within your capabilities as requested by your Manager.
  • Prepared to work additional hours as required to maintain design targets and project milestones.

 Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Good in depth knowledge and experience of rotating machinery and gearbox design / configurations and their performance.
  • In depth knowledge of gearbox N&V monitoring, data analysis and solutions for resolving identified problems.
  • In depth knowledge of rotor-dynamics of complex multi-shaft systems.
  • Time served apprenticeship with HNC/Degree or equivalent practical experience along with good general mechanical engineering design skills.
  • ANSYS experience for carrying out both component and assembly stress analysis.
  • Good communication skills to liaise with customers, suppliers and colleagues.
  • 3D CAD skills including experience of Pro-Engineer and Medusa 2D would be an advantage.
  • Good organisational skills and a willingness to assist the team to exceed the customers’ requirements.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work on own as well as part of a team.
