Utilities refer to those elements of a site that provide service support to operational equipment, personnel, and mission operations. Utilities are composed of three primary categories of systems: electrical power, environmental control, and life support. Electrical power consists of various subsystems including commercial power, backup power generation, power distribution, and uninterruptible power. Environmental control consists of subsystems including refrigerated cooling, heating, humidity control, and waste heat removal. Life support consists of subsystems including fresh air ventilation, potable water, food, and sewage. Ancillary subsystems providing support to operational utility equipment include fuel, compressed air, vacuum, filtration, and specialized utilities, such as cryogenics (e.g., liquid nitrogen [LN] and liquid oxygen [LOX]).
